Chapter 13

Holly sucked in a breath, and her eyes flew open. She was lying on her back, her head pounding and her right arm throbbing.

She looked around slowly before the memories hit her and her breath hitched. The star storm, the ship spinning out of control. The last thing she remembered was screaming and Avel telling her everything would be okay.

This did not feel okay, but she was alive. Holly moved her left arm and touched her head. Her fingers came away sticky with blood.

Wherever they were, the oxygen was breathable, but it came with a metallic tang. She eased off the straps on her seat, the skin underneath tender from where she’d been slammed around, and tested her other arm. It was badly bruised, and her back ached like she’d been kicked repeatedly by a horse.

Holly could taste blood and grit in her mouth as she swallowed. “Avel?” She moved her head slowly. Her stomach tightened as she saw his seat empty. “Where are you?”

“Hey, don’t move for now. I’m fixing a few things at the back. Or rather, at the bottom. We landed at a funny angle.”

Holly let out a relieved sigh. For a horrible second, when she’d seen his empty seat, she’d thought he’d been thrown out of the ship while they were in space. “How are you doing?”

“Better than you. Don’t move. You might have internal injuries.”

She twisted in her seat and realized the ship was resting with its nose pointing toward space. “What are you doing?”

“Keeping our oxygen supply stable. Before we went down, something tore a hole in the hull and messed with the supply line.”

Holly looked at the cracked control panel. “I remember the alarms.”

“We lost fifty percent of our supply, but we should be good for a while. The system recycles the air, providing it keeps working. Which it isn’t currently doing.”

Holly clung to the back of her seat as she looked down to see Avel at the other end of the corridor, a tool belt strapped around his waist as he worked on something inside a wall.

“Did you get hurt when we crashed?”

He glanced back at her and frowned. “Stop moving.”

“I feel okay. Bruised but nothing to worry about. How about you?”

“My ankle pinches a bit, but I can stand.” Avel twisted a piece of pipe before shutting the panel. “That should do for now.”

“That was a close call.” Holly’s insides shook as she realized how close they’d been to dying.

Avel tucked a wrench into his belt before scrambling back up toward Holly. He pulled himself into the seat next to her, the concern clear in his eyes. “It was. I tried to wake you after I came to, but you weren’t responding. I kept an eye on you, but I had to get the oxygen supply fixed or we wouldn’t have lasted long.”

“Of course!” A smile wobbled across her lips. “We have to be able to breathe.”

Avel reached out as if to touch her cheek but pulled back. “I was worried about you.
